Mary Jewel Bingham Bynum, 99, of Sylvan Spring, Ala. , passed from this life on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2019, at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Birmingham, Ala.

Mary Jewel was born Oct. 6, 1919, in Alcorn County, Miss. , to the late Joseph Giffin Bingham and Hattie Viola (Lentz) Bingham.

She was a member of Black Creek Church of Christ. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Howard Bynum Sr., as well as eight of her brothers and sisters. She had resided for the past 17 years with her oldest son, Sam Jr., and his wife, Sharyn.

She is survived by three sons, Samuel Howard Bynum Jr. and his wife Sharyn, of Birmingham, Ala. ; George Bingham Bynum of Houston, Texas; and William (Bill) Jeffery Bynum and his wife, Nancy, of Lakeland, Fla. ; one brother, Eural Bingham; grandchildren, Jenny Odom, Traycee Gossett, Mary Anne Andrews, Trevor Bynum, Elizabeth Bynum and Nathan Bynum; great-grandchildren, Regan Odom, Jabe Odom, Wyatt Gossett, Sam Gossett and Kennedy Lea Andrews; and many nieces and nephews.

Mom loved her spiritual family at Black Creek Church of Christ and was always in attendance when her health permitted. She loved staying in touch with her family and friends using email, text messages, Facebook, cards and letters. Those who knew her well knew that she was much like her own mom, Hattie Bingham.

Working in the kitchen and entertaining her company were high on her priority list. The funeral is at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at Peoples Chapel Funeral Home in Hueytown, Ala.

Graveside service is at 3 p.m. Saturday in Corinth, Miss. , at Valley of the Dogwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb.
