Obituary for Mary Louise O’Connor DANVERS- Mary L. O’Connor, beloved sister, cousin, and aunt passed away in the early morning on Wednesday, August 29th at the age of ninety-three. Born on May 11, 1925, Mary was the daughter of the late Michael and Nora (Crowley) O’Connor. A lifelong resident of Danvers, Mary resided with her younger brother, Bill, for all of his now 87 years.
A graduate of Danvers High School, Mary attended Burnett Business School and went on to work as an office manager for Prudential Insurance Company for over forty years. She was also a faithful member of St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish. Although Mary never chose to marry, she enjoyed the heartfelt affection and warm companionship of siblings, friends, cousins, and devoted nieces and nephews.
Mary was many things to those who loved her well—a mentor, cheerleader, champion, advocate, and dear friend. She emanated a “joie de vivre” that drew people to her and prompted them to seek out her company. Her optimism was a trademark of her personality, and she approached each new day with the certainty that something new and exciting was about to happen.
Whether it was for dinner at a favorite restaurant or a drive in the country, Mary was always delighted to accept an invitation. Mary reveled in sharing time and conversation with others, and eagerly anticipated the latest news from family and friends. She loved a good party, too, though she never imbibed in what her Irish relatives referred to as a “drop of the crature”.
She didn’t require “spirits” to have a good time. Witty and quick to laugh, she would chortle at an off-color joke, though never retell it, for that wouldn’t be proper, and proper was the rule. Tea was served in bone china cups, and cake slices were accompanied by polished silver forks.
A consummate hostess, Mary opened her home as the gathering place for Easter brunches, Thanksgiving feasts, and Christmas festivities replete with stories and light-hearted banter. Mary relished her role as doting aunt and cousin, and asked for nothing in return for her many kindnesses but the favor of one’s presence. At the end of each family celebration or casual visit, after good-byes were said and hugs exchanged, Mary would always call out, “Safe home!
” Family members came to expect and wait for her send-off message, reluctant to leave without her blessing. And now, Mary, from all who dearly love you, who grieve your loss, and who celebrate a life well-lived, we send you forth into the arms of our loving Creator, with a resounding and heartfelt “Safe home”. Mary is survived by her brother, William O’Connor of Danvers, Philip O’Connor of CA, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her siblings John O’Connor, Eileen Cullen, David O’Connor, and Nancy Riley. Her Funeral Mass was held at Saint Mary of the Annunciation Church on Tuesday, September 4. A celebration of Mary’s life will be celebrated by her family and friends.
