Mary Margaret Ludvigsen Flock passed away at age 87 on May 20, 2019 in Lawrenceville, GA. She was born August 2, 1931 in Mobile, AL. As the only daughter, she was doted on by her parents, “Ladd” Margaret and “Louie” Louis Peter Ludvigsen, and older brothers Donald and LP.
She loved poetry and read to her mother while Ladd sewed and they cried together over the sad ones. She also enjoyed drawing, piano, and dances. She attended Dominican High School and 2 years of Dominican College in New Orleans.
At age 15, she met the love of her life, “Cham” Joseph Chamblin Flock. Four years later in 1951 they married and settled in Mobile, AL. Then came the babies, starting with twin girls; 8 kids in all, 6 girls and 2 boys.
In 1962, they moved to Albany, GA and in 1967, to Atlanta, GA. Mom was an accomplished cook. Her pot roast, potatoes and gravy were Sunday favorites and her pineapple upside down cakes and jelly rolls were treats for special occasions.
Managing the budget in a growing household required creativity and daring. Mom bought bunk beds at the Army surplus store and painted them pink for the girls, then sewed matching bedspreads, bolster pillows, and curtains. On the curb in front of the Methodist Children’s Home, she found a dining room table big enough to seat the extended family and wrestled it home in her station wagon.
We use it to this day. As the nest emptied, Mom earned her real estate license and worked for several companies but her favorite years were with Ethel Lilley Real Estate. She was good at finding the right house and helped many of her kids find their homes.
Mom continued her poetry writing including “Holding Hands in Church” about Dad, “My Angels” about her first 4 daughters and “Another One” about her 6th child. In Mobile, Mom and Dad attended St. Monica’s Catholic Church; in Albany, St. Theresa’s and in Atlanta, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Thomas More. Mom and our sister Amy attended St. Marguerite d’Youville.
Mom was preceded in death by her parents, both her brothers, her husband Cham in 1996 and her youngest daughter Amy in 2007. She is survived by her children, Lissa, Linda, Mary Beth, Jenny, Joe, Kitty and Jim; 5 grandchildren, Hayley Helms, Joel Helms, Joseph Flock III, Kayla Brown and James Peavy; great granddaughter, Eva Brown. A memorial mass will be held at St. Marguerite d’Youville on Saturday, June 8 at 2:00 p.m. Mom’s ashes will be buried at a later date at Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile.
