Mary Scharff November 11, 1954 – January 14, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card On January 14, 2019 at 11:11 PM, Mary passed away peacefully. A longtime resident of Audubon, Mary attended St. Rose of Lima Grammar School, Paul VI High School and finally Immaculata College where she excelled at both academics and at basketball. While at Paul VI High School, Mary was the first female 1000 point scorer in South Jersey which occurred before the three point line was instituted.

At Immaculata College, she played on the first women’s team to appear on national television in 1975, the same year her team won the national championship. She was also part of the first women’s team to play at Madison Square Garden in 1975. In her senior year at Immaculata, Mary was selected to the Kodak All-American team in 1977.

She went on to play for the California Dreams in the short-lived WPBL. She continued her basketball career in coaching first at Archbishop Prendergast High School then at Villanova and finally as the head coach of her alma mater. In 2014, Mary, along with other members of the Mighty Macs, was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

Mary was employed as a computer analyst with Subaru of America in Cherry Hill for many years. Mary was predeceased by her beloved parents, Raymond and Catherine Scharff, her devoted brothers Gerry and Joseph Scharff along with her dear aunt and uncle, Peggy and Charlie Watson. She is lovingly survived by her three brothers, Richard (Cheryl) Scharff, James (Patti) Scharff and Patrick (Kathleen) Scharff, her sister-in-law, Kathleen Scharff; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins including Michael (Susan) Watson, Dennis (Winnie) Watson and John Watson along with many close friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Monday night, January 21st from 6:00 – 9:00 PM at the HEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 9 White Horse Pike, Haddon Heights. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday morning, January 23rd beginning at 11:00 AM at St. Rose of Lima Church, 4th Avenue and Kings Highway, Haddon Heights. A private interment will be held at New St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bellmawr following the Mass.
