Obituary of Mary Fry Mary Alyce Lincoln Fry, 87, beloved mother and grandmother, died surrounded by her family at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula on February 1, 2019. Daughter of Lillian and Robert E. Lincoln Sr., Mary was born August 5, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, raised in Southern California, and had lived on the Monterey Peninsula since 1954. Mary graduated from Immaculate Heart College and received teaching credentials from U.C. Santa Cruz.

An educator for over 20 years, Mary started her teaching career at Santa Catalina School for Girls, took a break to raise her family, and retired from Monte Vista Elementary School in 1994. Mary’s happiest day was the day she married Gerald T. Fry, who served on the Monterey City Council for 20 years, including six years as Mayor. Jerry always attributed his first electoral victory to Mary, who had filled in when he was unable to attend the League of Women Voters Candidates Night.

She did so well that Jerry always said, “Weeks after the election, people still thought they had voted for Mary! ” Jerry and Mary were together for almost 52 years, until his death in 2007. In 2010, after residing in Monterey for more than 50 years, Mary moved to Hacienda Carmel where she became an avid game player specializing in Manipulation and Rummikub.

Mary was renowned within her family as “the iGrammy” for her prowess in the digital world. A devout Catholic, Mary was a long-time parishioner of San Carlos Cathedral and also worshipped at the Carmel Mission. Mary is survived by children Lisa and husband Neal Gittleman, Luke, Terri and partner Raúl Raudales, and Leslie and husband Peter Sonné; grandchildren Sarah Fry, Peter Fry, Stephanie and husband Rexphil Rallanka, Mark Fry, Michael Sonné and wife Jonell; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and good friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, parents, and brother Robert E. Lincoln, Jr. Vigil service Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2019 at 6:30 pm and Mass of Christian burial Weds, Feb. 13, 2019 at 10:00 am, both at San Carlos Cathedral.

The family extends deepest thanks to the medical staff and palliative care team at CHOMP for their exceptional and compassionate care in Mary’s final week.
