Obituary for Mary Munn A life well lived . . .
Mary Alice Munn, 87, took the hand of her angel and entered heaven on August 10, 2018. Born Mary Alice Horney on November 30, 1930 in Fort Collins, CO, to Lydia and Dwight Horney. Mary Alice attended Washington Elementary School, Lincoln Junior High School (then located on Mulberry Street) and rode the “Galloping Goose” streetcar with her lifelong friend, Ruth (Baldwin) Rember, every day to attend Fort Collins High School (then considered on “the outskirts of town”) where she graduated in 1948.
While attending high school she played the cello, and the streetcar conductor would always wait for her and the cello to get on board even if she was running a little late. After high school, Mary Alice attended Denver Business College and then returned to Fort Collins to begin her long career at First National Bank in 1950. When Mary Alice first started at the bank as a file clerk, everything was done manually which often meant working until midnight for the small staff of 25 people.
Over the years she worked her way through almost every department at the bank, saw many location and name changes, and ultimately retired in 1993 as the Benefits Officer in Human Res. Mary Alice met her husband C. Johnny Munn at the Long Pond Roller Rink where she would often go with friends. They were married on December 30, 1950, made their home in Fort Collins, and enjoyed 48 years of marriage until Johnny passed away in 1998.
An accomplished cellist, Mary Alice joined the Fort Collins Symphony in 1948, “the year before Will Schwartz,” and played as a symphony member until 1963. She also enjoyed serving her community as a member of the Fort Collins Lodge, Junior Miss, the Women’s Guild and volunteering as a docent at Lincoln Center where she continued to enjoy her love of the performing arts. Mary Alice always made time for family and especially enjoyed gathering everyone together for special occasions.
During retirement, she dearly loved spending time with grandchildren, adventures with her Aunt Berdie and Sister in Law Hank, and time spent in the garden. Mary Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny, her brother Robert Horney, and her parents Lydia and Dwight Horney. She is survived by her daughter Kelli Turner and husband David, and step son Ronald Munn and wife Kimberly; three grandchildren, Travis Munn and wife Lali, Kerri Lakey and husband James, and Hadley Turner; and three great grandchildren, Emma, Weston and Londyn Lakey.
