Matthew B. Chaffin, 41, of Sage Street, Carlsbad, NM passed away March 5th, 2019 at home. Visitation will be 5 pm – 7 pm March 11th, 2019 at Denton-Wood Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 am, March 12th, 2019 at Hillcrest Baptist Church, Carlsbad NM with Pastor Dennis Teeters officiating.
Interment will follow at Carlsbad Cemetery. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Matt was born in Andrews, Texas on July 27th, 1977 to Marion “Bud” Chaffin and LaVerne Breedlove Chaffin.
He graduated from Eunice High School in 1995 and was a lifelong Cardinal. He attended college for a while at Wayland Baptist University where he sang and toured with the International Choir. On March 17th, 2018 he married his best friend and love of his life, Katrina at First Baptist Church, Eunice.
They got to spend 353 blessed days of marriage together. Matt began serving in music ministry and evangelism at the age of 16. Through this ministry, he shared God’s word through piano and song.
He served at many churches throughout his career and finally came home to First Baptist Eunice. During his time away, he moved to Nashville and sang with the gospel group Ernie Couch and Revival. He loved getting to travel the country sharing the gospel.
He also loved getting to try new restaurants and visit thrift shops looking for treasured albums and books. He belonged to the Singing Churchmen of New Mexico. He loved getting to spend time with those men and singing with them.
After the loss of his dad at the age of 11, he and his mother became very close. They shared many special memories together. After his return to Eunice, he enjoyed time with his sister, nieces, and nephews.
He loved going to see the kids play ball and other extracurricular activities. When he married Katrina, he got a package deal which included three step-children: Paige, Regan and Ryan. He loved them as his own and called them “my kids”.
He cherished the time he spent with them and had such a special relationship with each one. Matt loved cooking and trying new recipes. He loved Star Wars and the Big Bang Theory.
He loved to laugh and had such a witty sense of humor. His love for life was contagious. He leaves behind a great legacy of faith and music.
His voice will live on in our hearts forever. Proceeded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Sam Hodges. Survived by his wife Katrina Chaffin of Carlsbad; step-daughters: Paige and Regan Davis; step-son: Ryan Davis; sister: Jill Hodges; niece: Cari Coy and husband Matt; niece: Casey Hodges; nephew: Cody Hodges and wife Jessica; great-nephews: Tyson and Tanner; great-niece: Ellie; father and mother-in-law: Carl and Nita Brannan; brother-in-law: Mike Brannan and wife Kim; nephew: Marc; nieces: Madison, Morgan, and Addyson.
Pallbearers will be Don Jones, Steve Jones, Troy Hahn, Dewey Hopper, Stephen Thatcher Sr. and Sam Plumlee.
