Obituary for Mattie Mozelle Vervalin “You’re here not by chance, but by God’s choosing to fulfill his special purpose in your life, for this generation”. -Author Unown, Mozelle’s Journal In the ninety-nine years, Mattie “Mozelle” (Summers) Vervalin was on this Earth, her intelligence, love, and passion for life showed through in all of her actions. Mozelle was born February 22, 1919 to W.E. Summers and Flora Martin and was the third oldest of eight children.
She once wrote that her parents did the best they could and “trusted us not to go wrong”. Mozelle graduated from Royse City High School in 1937 and married the love of her life Charles “Chock” Vervalin in 1939. She described his best qualities as nice, thoughtful, considerate, respectful, and without “bad habits”.
Mozelle and Chock had two children David (1941) and Dianne (1949). Motherhood suited her well and she was very active in all aspects in their lives having a significant impact at any age. Mozelle’s most valued job during her lifetime was being a mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother.
She has described herself as a “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II, as her good penmanship afforded her a job with an electric pencil putting serial numbers on airplane parts. She worked various jobs in the City of Royse to bring in extra for the family. She was very active in the First United Methodist Church of Royse City, joining in 1951 and was part of the St. John Sunday School Class.
Mozelle and Chock built their family home in Royse in 1952 and have been part of the area ever since. Mozelle would often say she could do anything that anyone else could do, but some things not as well. This led her to try anything and to become a fantastic cook.
While she did not mind cooking, she cooked to feed those she loved. Her turkey and dressing, roast and potatoes, and pies were loved by all. She enjoyed sewing and would spend hours making quilts for each of her children and grandchildren.
Mozelle loved “junking” and would search for treasures at flea markets and antique shows. While she did enjoy shopping, it was the time she spent with her family that provided her much joy. She adored her grandchildren and each of them describe her as their best friend while growing up.
Gran/Momo’s house was the location of their first sleepovers. She would not hesitate to make doll clothes, build Lincoln log cabins, or make a fort. She showed them how to camp, bake, ride a bike, play hopscotch, garden, and cook.
Her drive for lifelong learning made her a skilled conversationalist with knowledge on any subject. She was extremely organized, very intelligent, independent, and had a great sense of humor. This was our Mozelle…mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, friend to all…she will be missed tremendously.
On Sunday, May 20, 2018, Mozelle was called Home in her family home surrounded by those she loved. She was greeted in Heaven by her parents; her husband: Charles “Chock” Vervalin; her siblings: Opal Buck, Pauline Lofland, Earl Summers, Seeley Summers, and Jo Billingsly.
