Maye was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Alma, Nebraska by J.F. Kicsow on July 9, 1922. As a young adult she was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church by C.M. Hollensen. The family lived on the farm north of old Republican City and Maye attended Gorman Rural School District 72 north of Republican City in Harlan County and graduated from Republican City High School in 1940.
As a senior, Maye worked as a teacher’s aide with a salary of $8/month. Maye was awarded a scholarship to Hastings College but turned it down to help out on the farm. After graduation, Maye worked for various families as a domestic helper.
In 1942, Maye met George Henry Dorn at a dance in Republican City and on August 20, 1944, they got married at Peace Lutheran Church in Alma. Together they farmed near Wilcox, Orleans, Stamford and Beaver City before settling north of Alma in 1959. During this time Maye would work as a waitress, domestic helper, office assistant and farm hand.
In 1969 they moved into Alma. George owned Dorn’s Plumbing, Heating, and Air and Maye worked for Alma Public Schools. Maye worked for the school from 1963 to 1993 as a cook’s assistant and later as head cook.
She loved working at the school and being in contact with students and teachers. Maye became known for her cinnamon rolls/twists that she first started serving at Parent-Teacher conferences as a treat. After retiring, Maye worked part time at the Post Office for almost 13 years.
She enjoyed this job as well because she could continue to greet everyone when they came in to pick up their mail. Along with her jobs, she loved farm work and helped her son Gale with chores daily until she moved to Minden in December 2011. Maye was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Alma where she served as a Sunday school teacher for 15 years as well as participating in WELCA (woman’s group), quilting, and funeral planner.
She was especially excited with the Church’s expansion and new kitchen but never got to work in it. In 2011 Maye moved to Minden. She missed her friends but continued to be in contact by phone and letters.
She attended the Tuesday night Jambaree in Alma which she thoroughly enjoyed. Maye joined Bethany Lutheran Church in Minden and was happy to be a part of the ‘Piece Corps’ and continued to make quilts for Lutheran Church of America. In 2016 she finally made her hundred and completed 135 quilts that year.
She continued quilting and tying quilts until her death. Maye was preceded in death by her husband George on August 27, 1981; her father on January 2, 1967; her mother on February 12, 1989; four sisters, Doris Haussermann and her husband Ernest, Ella Brugh and her husband Louis, Nora Rawson and her husband James, and Jeanette Warren; two brothers, Robert “Bud” Fischer, and Karl “Jim” Fischer and his wife Shirley; a daughter-in-law, Joan Dorn; and a grandson Justin Gale Dorn.
