Melchoir “Mel” Volk, 79, of Mandan, passed away July 25, 2018 at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Church of St. Joseph, Mandan, ND with Rev. Shane Campbell as celebrant.

Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be held Friday, July 27, 2018 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Mel Volk was born September 6, 1938 in Flasher, ND to Elias and Katherine (Winter) Volk.

He was raised on the family farm. On April 7, 1959, Mel married the love of his life, Elaine Stroh. Mel started his career in welding at Welk Steel.

He started teaching welding classes at the State Industrial School and Bismarck State Vocational Center. He was a talented handy man who was known as the “Modern Day Blacksmith”. Mel loved the land and took pride in his gardening and yardwork.

Camping was one of his favorite adventures. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. You could often challenge him in a game of pinochle, especially a family favorite, “Blitz”.

Mel was a friendly, outgoing man who will be remembered for his loving devotion to family and friends. Mel will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his daughter, Candace (Alan) Fleck of Mandan; sons, Dean of Bismarck, Calvin (Stephanie) of Fargo, Darwin (Sherry) of Dickinson, Troy (Aimee) of Bismarck, Jason of Mandan, and Terry of Mandan; 11 grandchildren, Zachary (Jen), Isaiah, Desiree (Konrad) Crockford, Joshua, Jacob, Layne, Jonathan, Shae, Jayden, Paighton, Mallana; 3 great-grandchildren, Dawson, Rowyn, and Rylen; brothers and sisters, Anna Moran of Bismarck, Magdelene Vetter of Bismarck, Eugene (Clementine) Volk of Bismarck, Sr. Maria OSB of Duluth MN, Lydia Braun of Mandan, Angeline Braun of Bismarck, Theresa Schriock of Carson, Evelyn (Ervin) Miller of Fargo, Valentina Bruington of Bismarck, Barbara of Glendive, MT, and Adam (Sandy) Volk of Bismarck. He is preceded in death by his wife, Elaine; grandchildren, Cranston Fleck and Wade Volk; brothers, Fr.

Edwin, Leo, Amandus and Michael Volk; brothers-in-law, Ernest Sheetz, John Vetter, Pius Braun, Adam Braun, Alan Schriock and Gerard Moran.
