Upon graduation from high school, Sergeant, Melvin C. Marshall, of Syracuse, New York, enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. Upon completion of Army basic training, Sergeant Marshall attended the Army’s Installation Weather Observer School, Keesler Field, Mississippi, where he was trained as a Weather Observer (MOS 784). From Keesler Field, Sergeant Marshall was deployed to various locations throughout the European theater while assigned to the 21st Weather Squadron.

During his deployment, he supported “Operation Gomorrah,” “Operation Overlord,” “Operation Market Garden” and the Battle of the Bulge. After Germany surrendered unconditionally for the Americans, British, and Soviets, Sergeant Marshall returned to Mitchel Field, New York, where he separated from the Air Corps on September 26, 1945. Sergeant Marshall was decorated with the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

In addition, Major General David Post, U.S. Air Force, recognized his faithful service.
