OBITUARY Melvin “Mel” Philip Meyers June 24, 1938 – January 16, 2019 Melvin Philip Meyers, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on January 16, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 24, 1938 in Brooklyn, NY, son of Louis and Celia Meyers. Mel graduated in 1962 from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Aero/Space Engineering.

He was a proud member and served as President of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity and Hillel. His first job was with Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank, CA. , where he was a member of the Supersonic Transport design team.

In 1965 he joined TRW Systems in Clear Lake City, Texas, and became a member of the Apollo Space Program. His primary responsibility was the onboard verification of the re-entry guidance and navigation system for the Apollo spacecraft. In May of 1974, he joined Sun Life of Canada as a new agent, and three years later, found himself in Dallas as the new Sun Life branch manager.

He was elected by the field force to the Sun Life Agent Advisory Council, which was comprised of the leading agents in the company. Mel served as President of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA), Dallas Chapter, from 1999-2000. He was a Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) and of the Society of Financial Service Professionals where he also served on the board of directors.

He served on the board of directors of the Dallas Council of Alcohol & Drug Abuse and the Southwest Jewish Congress. He is predeceased by his brother Al (Tecla) and sisters Selma (Bernie) & Harriette. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Tanya, daughter, Shelley (Avi), and sons Lewis (Shari) and Steven (Orly).

He was adored by his 12 grandchildren, Saul (Kate), Becky, & Tammy Schisler; Jeremy & Maddie Meyers; Mitchell & Brandon Meyers; and Evan, Leora, Jonah, Sam, and Jacquie Mitzner. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, George Lewin, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Mel and Tanya are 4th generation members of Congregation Shearith Israel where Mel served on the board of the synagogue for 10 years, served as Brotherhood President, and was named “Man of the Year” in 1988.

He was also on the board of the Levine Academy of Dallas and a member of Rotary International. He was a licensed private pilot and had an Instrument Flight Rating. Mel was an avid runner and cyclist.

He enjoyed countless hours of boating and traveling with his family. The highlight of every year was the lake vacation that Mel and Tanya would organize for the entire family. Nobody could pull someone on the innertube quite like Mel!

Services will be held at 9 AM on Friday, January 18th in the Chapel of Sparkman/Hillcrest, with interment to follow at Shearith Israel Memorial Park on Dolphin Road. Reception to follow at Congregation Shearith Israel.
