On February 17, 2019, Merle Aldon Waterman passed away at the age of 87. Merle will be forever loved and deeply missed by Emma Caroline Waterman, his wife of 60 years, his three children Marian, Melody and Merle II, his seven grandchildren, Ceileigh, Rachel, Django, Derek, Quinn, Gina and Fiona, his sister Carol Kooistra and sisters-in-law Ruth Rhoades and Beth Phillips and brother-in-law Bill Schumacher. Merle was pre-deceased by brothers Byron and Jack Waterman.

Merle was born September 6, 1931 in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, Canada. He grew up in Vernon, British Columbia and after hitchhiking to Oregon in search of summer work as a teenager, he graduated from McLoughlin High School in Milton-Freewater. Merle settled in Pendleton, Oregon, working as a Freight Clerk for the Union Pacific Railroad for 16 years and capturing the heart of his soon-to-be-wife Caroline.

In 1972, Merle and Caroline relocated their family to Corvallis, Oregon. Merle worked for several firms including Summit Information Systems. After his retirement from Summit in 1996, Merle’s favorite work was serving his family, making and eating cookie dough with his grandchildren, writing letters to his large, extended family, tending his house and garden, exercising with his Fitness-Over-50 friends and worshipping with his church family at Servant’s Fellowship.

Merle was a kind and honorable man with an inexhaustible supply of love and generosity for family, friends and fellow man. The family suggests that donations in his memory be sent to The Navigators (www. navigators.org).
