MGySgt Robert L. Harvey, Sr., (Retired USMC), of Newport, passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at Crystal Coast Hospice House, Newport. Born on January 1, 1948 in Wilkes-Barre, PA, he was the son of the late Maleleel and Helen Harvey of Luzerne, PA. Robert was a graduate of Luzerne High School, class of 1966.

He attended the University of Maryland and Long Beach State. Bob retired from the Marine Corps after 26 years of service as a Master Gunnery Sergeant. MGySgt Harvey was a veteran of the Vietnam War and Beirut, Lebanon.

During his Marine Corps career, he received over 40 decorations and citations, which included: Meritorious Service Medal, two Air Medals, and two Navy Achievement Medals with Combat “V”. Bob had a passion for football having lettered for 4 years at Luzerne High School. He continued playing football for another 19 years, off and on while serving in the Marine Corps, and was proud that that he made the Marine all-star team two times after the age of 35.

He also played almost any sport that was offered in the Marines. Bob played and coached several football, basketball, and softball teams to several championships. He was an avid cyclist, riding 5 to 10 miles a day until his death.

Bob loved his Marine Corps and our Country. Bob was retired from the North Carolina Department of Corrections as a Case Manager in 2006 and received numerous awards for his work with the NCDOC. He was also a member of the Elks, the American Legion, and a charter member of the Newport VFW.

He is survived by two sons, Robert L. Harvey, Jr., and wife Melanie, of Port Orange, FL, and Lee K. Harvey of Newport; two step-daughters, Major Dawn Mannix, and husband George, of MD and Paula Sears, and husband Scott, of MD; three sisters, Helene Storrs, Lori Rankin, and Darlene Hoven; two grandchildren Gabriel Harvey and Meghan Mannix. In addition to his parents, his wife Karen Kocher Harvey; one sister Sandra Bellas; three brothers, Kenneth, David and Rick Harvey, precede him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to the Crystal Coast Hospice House; 100 Big Rock Weigh Newport, NC 28570.
