OBITUARY Michael E. Freer January 26, 1943 – September 6, 2018 Play Tribute Movie FREER – Michael E. August 6, 2018, of Grand Island. Mike Freer lost an 8 year, hard fought battle with cancer and is now free to drive his beloved Shelby Mustangs and target shoot all he wants. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathy (Kennedy) and his prized children, Sean (Susan) and Shannon (Shawn) Strange.

He had a chosen brother and sister, Bruce and Dee Herringshaw, whom he loved dearly. Mike was predeceased by his parents, William and Catherine Freer and his sister, Laura Romashko. Mike attended Holy Spirit Elementary School and graduated from Hutch-Tech Vocational High School, where he also taught for 36 years.

He received his undergraduate degree in vocational technology from SUNY Buffalo and his graduate degree from Canisius College. Mike proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1961-1967. While in the Marines, he served in Vietnam and as an instructor at the rifle range at Paris Island Marine Corps Recruiting Station.

He joined the NYS Army National Guard in 1973 and retired in 1993. During his time in the guard, he achieved the rank of Master Sargeant and was called to active duty for the Prison Guard Strike, the Blizzard of ‘77, the Connecticut St. Armory Fire and Desert Storm. Mike also taught at the NCO School at Fort Smith.

He was a member of the National Educational Association, NYS United Teachers, Buffalo Teachers Federation, Mohawk Gun Club, American Legion Post 0721, Marine Corps Association and Foundation, 74/174 Veterans Association and the WNY Shelby and Mustang Club. Mike will be sadly missed by all those who came to know him. Friends may call Sunday from 4-8PM at the DENGLER, ROBERTS, PERNA FUNERAL HOME, 3070 Delaware Ave.

, Kenmore, where a Service will be held Monday at 11 AM. Flowers gratefully declined. Mike wished that donations be made to Hospice, Grand Island Public Library, Teacher’s Desk, Paws for Heroes, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or a charity of your choice.
