Obituary for Michael Herbert Whelan Michael (“Mike”, “Papa”) Herbert Whelan born August 31, 1941, a native of San Diego, California and longtime resident of Slidell and Mandeville, Louisiana entered Heaven’s gates on Friday, October 12, 2018. During his 53 years of marriage to his wife Kris, they enjoyed the simple things in life like their daily 4:00 AM coffee together just talking and enjoying each other’s companionship. As a Dad, he coached his sons in both football and basketball and was their Cub Scout Pack Leader.
Mike also enjoyed his career in the banking industry serving as Vice President for Bank of America. Mike went on to start his own company as a business and financial consultant. In recent years, he worked with his son in the family real estate business.
Along with his wife, Kris they devoted their lives to serving God through their family and friends. Their Grandchildren and Great Nieces and Nephews were their greatest treasures. They were there for all of their big and little days from Awards Nights, to Band Performances and Athletic Events to Birthdays and Graduations.
They enjoyed hosting family and friends and their home was always the center for family get togethers and parties. Mike was a lifetime learner and enjoyed highly intellectual subjects and conversations, always with a quick wit or dry joke. Mike enjoyed playing cards, such as cribbage and pinochle and teaching his grandchildren the game of chess.
He thoroughly enjoyed history and NBA basketball, in particular The Lakers and The Pelicans. One of the highlights of Mike’s life was travelling to Israel and walking in the footsteps of Jesus. He was baptized in the Jordan River during this trip.
Mike enjoyed doing small group bible studies with both his Men’s groups and Couples’ groups with his wife Kris. Mike is survived by his son, Michael H. Whelan Jr. and wife Crystal Whelan of Mounds, Oklahoma, his son Robert A. Whelan and wife Marianne Whelan of Mandeville, Louisiana; grandchildren Patrick Ramos and wife Sara Ramos, Login Whelan, Matthew Whelan, Alin Whelan, Ashley Whelan and Thomas Whelan; and his great grandson Asher Michael Ramos; his brother Howard Whelan and wife Robyn and many beloved nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. Mike is preceded in death by his wife Kris Whelan and his parents, Frank and Hattie Whelan of San Diego, California.
A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, La. On Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. with visitation starting at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made on line to the Michael J.
