Michael J. Morris 66, of Bonita Springs, FL died Monday, April 29, 2019 at Joanne’s House at Hope Hospice. Michael was born August 3, 1952 in Youngstown, OH a son of the late John L. and Emma J. (Steele) Morris. Michael is pre-deceased by two brothers: Daniel E. (1970) and John L. (1999).
Michael had been a resident of Bonita Springs since 1974, coming from Struthers, OH. Michael was an avid golfer and fisherman as well as a published poet. Michael fished both in OH while growing up and for 45 years while living in FL.
He also fished the Amazon River in South America and various locations throughout the United States. Michael was an outstanding athlete having obtained five varsity letters in high school in only two years. In 2014 Michael was inducted into the Struthers High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Michael was extremely proud of this accomplishment. He was a member of the 1968 undefeated Steel Valley Conference Championship football team as well as a starting center and defensive end his senior year. His golf team in the Fall of 1969 was able to set a low team average of 148.
Michael, as catcher, and the 1970 SHS baseball team was able to advance to regional finals. After high school, Michael was able to participate in the National Amateur Baseball Federation playing for Campbell A.C. He was a member of the 1971 National Junior Champion team.
He also continued to excel in golf after high school. In 1989 Michael won the City of Naples Match Play Championship. Michael coached youth baseball for 6 years.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Nancy L. Morris of Bonita Springs, FL; two sons, Daniel S. Morris of Naples, FL and Matthew B. Morris of Denver, Colorado; one step-daughter, Caitlin LaBonte (Jon) of Wilton, NH; two brothers, Leo Morris (Janet) of Struthers, OH and Tom Morris (Angie) of Naples, FL; two sisters, Sarah Morris (Henry Rossi) of Cape Coral, FL and Mary Jane Davis (ONeal) of Orangeburg, SC; one sister-in-law Cindy Pereira (Jaime) of Naples, FL; father and mother-in-law Roger St Germain (Mary) of Agawam, MA and 4 loving grandchildren, 2 Aunts, numerous cousins, 14 nieces and nephews and 16 grand nieces and nephews. A Memorial service to celebrate Michael’s life is scheduled for June 1st, 2019 at 12:00 pm (Noon) at Shikany Funeral Home, 28300 Tamiami Tr. So.
