Michael “Mike” Scalera Michael “Mike” Scalera died Peacefully at the Wadsworth Pointe Hospice on November 3, 2018 in Wadsworth, Ohio at the age of 100½. He was born April 11, 1918 in Akron, Ohio, where he was a lifelong resident. Mike was a decorated veteran of World War II, where he served in the South Pacific theatre from 1942 until the end of the war.

Mike is survived by sons, Michael “Mick,” wife Susan and Ronald “Ronny ”; wife, Patricia “Patti”. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Zeno), who passed away in 1989 and his second wife, Patti (Stephanoff), who passed away in 2012. In addition, there are four grandchildren and eight great- grandchildren.

Mike was born to Rocco and Anna (Masiella). He grew up in Akron’s North Hill where he went to North High. During the Great Depression he sold apples and newspapers on corners of downtown Akron.

The money he earned went to supplement the family income during those very hard times. After the war he went to work for the family beer distributorship as a delivery truck driver. He then went to work as an automobile parts salesman.

Except for a short stint selling beauty supplies on the road, he was the manager of the parts department for a couple of different car dealerships until his first retirement in 1982. Mary passed away in 1989 and he found himself with too much time on his hands. He was never one to sit idle, so he went back to work for Acme #1 in Akron.

There he met his second wife Patti, and they were married from 2001 until she passed. Mike continued working at Acme until his second retirement on his 99th birthday in 2017. Mike loved to play golf.

No one can remember when he started playing but he continued until last summer. He got his fifth hole-in-one a couple of days after his 95th birthday. As he aged his drives got shorter, but his short game never suffered.

When he beat you, he would never gloat, just flash you a gremlin like grin. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 5 to 8 at Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, 39 S. Miller Rd, Fairlawn OH,where funeral services are scheduled for 10:00am Friday, Fr. Edward A. Burba will officiate the ceremony.

Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. A reception to follow, all are welcome to attend and celebrate Mike’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to your favorite charity.

The family would like to thank nurses and staff on the fourth floor at Akron City Hospital for efforts and dedication.
