OBITUARY Mike James Liuzzi May 9, 1930 – December 6, 2018 Mike James Liuzzi May 9, 1930 – December 6, 2018 Mike James Liuzzi died on December 6, 2018. The essence of Mike was his family and his friends. Mike’s parents emigrated from Italy to San Diego, and forged a new life and family in America.
Mike was born in 1930 and lived all of his 88 years in San Diego. Mike and Jean (McCrory), his wife of 67 years, met at their high school graduation in 1949, even though they had already been classmates for seven years while attending Roosevelt middle school and San Diego High School. As was common at the time, they married young two years later in 1951, at Our Lady of the Rosary church in Little Italy, and bought the house they lived in the entire 67 years they were married.
Shortly thereafter, Mike shipped off to Korea as an Army soldier. Though most of his platoon was killed while they battled on the front lines, Mike returned home as a decorated veteran to a baby daughter, Cherie. Two more children followed, Michael and Michele, 5 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
Mike lived a long and full life. He labored extremely hard for more than 40 years as a furniture mover and supervisor at Bekins. But after retirement, Mike was intent on exploring his many hidden, unspoken and surprising passions.
Mike was a devoted, dedicated and loving husband to Jean. They shared strong Catholic beliefs and convictions, serving Mass together as Eucharistic Ministers at Our Lady of Refuge church. Mike’s funeral Mass will be at Our Lady of the Rosary at 1668 State Street on Friday, December 21 at 2:00 pm.
