Mildred Mae (Smith) Rolow, age 92, formerly of Wray, Colorado passed away Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Society in Goodland. She was born January 8, 1926, the oldest daughter of Roy W. and Eva I. (Messenger) Smith at her grandparents’ home in Kirk, CO. She attended Hell Creek School southeast of Kirk, CO and Idlewild School north of Stratton, CO and Colorado Springs School.

She married Arthur Clark Rolow on, December 5, 1945, in St. Francis, KS. Mildred and Clark adopted two young sisters in 1957, Phyllis and Judy. During WWII, Mildred worked at Boeing Aircraft as a mechanic and cable rigger on B-29’s in Renton, WA.

From 1953 to 1982 she and Clark owned and operated The Hale Store in Hale, CO and during that time she helped Clark at the post office. They retired and sold the store to longtime family friends, Lincoln and Janice Wilson. In 1997, they moved to Wray, CO until her recent move to Goodland due to health reasons.

In 1940, Mildred accepted the Lord our Savior at the Stratton Church of God. Later in 1991, she joined St. John’s United Church of Christ in Idalia, CO. She enjoyed many activities: reading; arts and crafts; knitting; crocheting; baking and decorating cakes; traveling; camping; making school clothes for her girls and grandchildren; her green thumb at gardening; canning so she could share her harvest with family and friends; bird watching, she could tell you what species was outside the window simply by listening to their warbling.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, Clark; sister, Margaret (Smith) Ross. Mildred is survived by her daughter, Phyllis L. Long (John Meszaros) of Goodland, KS; daughter, Judy L. Taylor of Greeley, CO; grandchildren, Gary Long of Burlington, CO; Brad Long of Goodland, KS; Ronnie Jo (Zach) Reedy of Greeley, CO; Joe (Charity) Gilliland of Greeley, CO; Brenda Gilliland of Craig, CO; Nichole (Brett) Travis of Lamar, CO; Sheri Hommes of Greeley, CO; sister-in-law, Patricia (Harold) Madsen of St. Francis, KS. Memorial Service will be Friday, April 13, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. MT at St. John’s Church, 28591 County Road 7, in Idalia, CO.
