OBITUARY Mildred McFarland June 7, 1917 – November 9, 2018 Mildred “Tiny” McFarland of Charleston, WV passed away on Friday, November 9, following 101 years of a full and wonderful life. Tiny was born to Walter and Ethel Lucas on June 7, 1917, near Grafton WV. She was a graduate of Grafton High School, and the Cook Hospital School of Nursing in Fairmont, WV.
Following graduation, Tiny began her 23 year nursing career working at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston where she was loved by her patients as well as the doctors and nurses she supported as Head Nurse. In addition, Tiny was an active volunteer for Charleston Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, and 55 Plus doing blood pressure readings throughout the Kanawha Valley. She was a Methodist, and was preceded in death by John, her husband of 53 years, who died in 1992.
John and Tiny had a truly wonderful life together. They married in 1941, and John dubbed her “Tiny”. As members of the Ina Webb club, John and Tiny travelled to many wonderful places during their marriage.
After retirement, they visited 49 states as well as several European countries. They ballroom danced at the Charleston Passepied Dance Club, and were devout WVU fans, where they held season tickets for over 60 years. Tiny also enjoyed knitting, music, the arts and live theater.
More than anything, she loved spending time with family and friends. In addition to her husband John, Tiny was preceded in death by her brother, Osborne, and sister, Frieda. She is survived by her nephew Dwain, his wife Tammy, and their daughters, Ally and Karly, who were inspired to follow their Aunt Tiny into the career of nursing.
Tiny is also survived by her sister-in-law, Virginia Lucas, as well as several other nieces and nephews. Service will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 11:00 AM at the Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, West Virginia Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, 5233 Rocky Fork Road, Cross Lanes, WV 25313 with Pastor Steve White officiating. At her request, there will be no visitation prior to the ceremony.
Above all else, Tiny would want to be remembered as an extremely happy person, who dearly loved her family and friends. She would always be the first to say that she lived a wonderful and fulfilling life. We know she is now celebrating her long awaited reunion with her beloved husband John.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Bettie J. Burdette RN Nursing Scholarship, WVU School of Nursing, 3100 MacCorkle Ave SE, Charleston, WV 25304 or Charleston’s Meals on Wheels program. Condolences may be sent by visiting www. tylermountainfuneralhome.com.
