Johnson entered this life on May 8, 1931, in Sugar Land, Texas, and was the fifth of ten children born to the late Curley Thomas and Agnes Austin-Thomas. On Friday, January 25, 2019, she transitioned to be with her Lord and Savior, the love of her life, the Rev. George H. Johnson, Jr., and her parents and siblings.
Mildred spent her youth in Sugar Land, TX, where she attended the Fort Bend ISD M.R. Wood School and later graduated from the Houston ISD Jack Yates High School in Third Ward, TX. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas Southern University and was an elite member of the TSU basketball team. Mildred continued her education by enrolling in the Modeling Association of America in New York, where she received professional training in charm and etiquette.
She began her professional career as an independent consultant for daycares and private schools, and later opened a chain of charm schools at several locations, including on Dowling and Holman Streets, Palm Center and in Bay City. Amazingly, the Bay City location is still in existence. As her business progressed, Mildred felt she was not reaching the kids who really needed to build self-esteem, so she took her school to the YWCA in Third Ward, where she became Program Director for 75–100 kids per week in her class.
She eventually expanded her program to include training young ladies for pageantry, and for five consecutive years, took teens to the Apollo Theater and Jamaica International. Her passion for helping young girls reach their full potential, led her to organize the Fantastic Fashion Modeling Club, where they competed in shows in LA, winning many of their competitions. Mildred joined Fourth Missionary Baptist Church in early 1950.
She sang in the choir and was on the Pastor’s Aid Committee. Her passion was missions, and she had the privilege of being trained by one of her most admired Mission Presidents, Sister Zearline Barnes. Sister Barnes gave Mildred the opportunity to serve in IMBGA, where she was the event coordinator for Mission II.
Throughout her career, Mildred served on many boards: The Children’s Museum of Houston (first minority); YWCA Committee on Administration; Kuumba House Repertory Theater; Fashion Guild Models of Texas; Fashion Group of Houston; Black Heritage Society; Conference of Women; and Divine Dynesphere Christian Center for the Youth, Inc. Of all her accomplishments, Mildred was most proud of her fifty-one-year marriage to the late Rev. George Johnson. As a way to honor his memory, she established an annual event to raise money for the “Rev.
George Johnson Scholarship for Youth Fund”, which provided financial support for youth to attend Summer Christian Camp and for the Fine Arts Program at Precious Jewels Alpha Learning Center. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. George Johnson; her parents, Curley and Agnes Thomas; sisters, Eunice, Thelma, Bobbie, Rosie, and Willie Mae; brothers, Sterling, MC, Charles, Frank and Earnest; and stepson, Reginald Johnson Sr. To keep her legacy alive, she leaves a niece whom she raised, Latonia Joseph; grandson, Reginald, Jr.; godchildren, Rene Bishop, Cora Conners, Lisa Spivey, Mia Hoyle, Jamil Anderson, Jessica Anderson, Tabika Johnson, Ahmad Rashad Jennings, and Precious Wilson; countless nieces, nephews, other relatives, extended family, and friends to keep her legacy alive.
