Morris “Dean” Calhoon died on April 14, 2019, at his home in Alamosa, CO. Dean was born July 17, 1951 in Lamar, CO to James Nevin Calhoon and Mary Alice (Sturdy) Calhoon. The family moved from Lamar to Las Animas, CO in August of 1959 where he resided in the family home until the spring of 1967 when he went to The State Home and Training School in Grand Junction.

Dean remained there until the spring of 1976 when he was transferred to Alamosa, CO where he would live in group homes until his death. He went back to Las Animas for the Christmas holidays when weather allowed, and spent time there every summer until 1997. After that time, he spent time in Greeley with family at Christmas time and in the summer.

Starting in 2005, he spent time in Monument with family, going to Greeley for a visit during the holidays. Sometime during the summer he would be in Monument with family until after Christmas of 2013 because of renal kidney disease causing him to need dialysis until his death. Dean loved his family and always enjoyed spending time with them.

He LOVED trains and would go to the corner to watch them go through town every day. Dean was a social butterfly and never knew a stranger! He would always introduce himself to anyone he didn’t know and would remember them.

Going to Walmart was an experience because there would always be lots of people that knew him and would talk to him, so extra time had to be allowed for those trips. He will be missed by those that knew him. He will especially be missed by his family who loved him very much.

He is survived by Roger (Joy) Calhoon of Litchfield Park, AZ, Linda (Denny) Fenster of Monument, CO, Karyl (David) Hand of Independence, IA, Tom (Susan) Calhoon of Muskogee, OK, Martin “Mac” Calhoon, Mary Seltzer of Greeley, CO. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Calhoon, father Jim Calhoon, infant brother Richard Calhoon, and brother Bob Calhoon.

Dean has been cremated. There will be a memorial service at Rogers Family Mortuary Chapel located at 205 State Avenue, Alamosa, CO 81101 at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 for his friends and family. A burial service at the Chapel of the Bent County-Las Animas Cemetery will be held on May 17, 2019 at 1:00 pm.
