Obituary for Morris, Moishe (Lefty) Schulman Morris, Moishe, (Lefty) Schulman was born in the Bronx, New York on August 2, 1921. He was the youngest of three sons, whose parents emigrated from Odessa between the world wars. He attended Brooklyn College and lettered in track and had fond memories of his experience competing in the Penn relays, even though his team lost because a teammate dropped the baton during the handoff.

He later got his Master’s Degree from New York University (NYU). He loved sports and got his nickname Lefty, because he played handball and racket games left handed, despite preferring to write with his right. He worked well with children and taught in the New York City School System for over 30 years, spending the bulk of his career in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

He taught math in a yeshiva for a short time, too. He was very well liked, a kind and empathetic teacher who liked to create unique learning games and strategies to motivate his students. Many memorable summers were spent in upstate New York, where Moishe ran a day camp in the Adirondacks.

He met Beatrice, his wife, while working a summer job in Camp Tamiment, a resort located in the Poconos, Pennsylvania and they married in 1946 shortly after he returned from military service post WWII. They had one daughter, Susan, whom Morris loved spending time with, teaching her to ride a bike, play tennis, and even drive an automobile (he had the patience of a saint). Morris and Bea retired to Century Village in Deerfield Beach in February,1978.

Morris enjoyed an active retirement, playing handball, ping pong, shuffle board, cards, and socializing with friends and family. He liked to read and do the New York Times crossword puzzle. His twin granddaughters, Rachael and Leah, were born in November 1978, followed by Erika in January 1985 and they all brought great joy and laughter into his life and he to theirs.

They adored him. While Bea cooked wonderful homemade dinners for every family occasion and get together, Morris provided the entertainment for his grandkids, daughter and son-in law, Stan. He’d take them to play ping-pong, which he always won, or engage them in card games like casino or gin rummy.

At dinner, Morris held court delighting the family with a joke or a story that put a smile on everyone’s face. Whenever someone celebrated a birthday, an anniversary or gathered for a Jewish holiday, he wrote a poem accompanied by an original drawing that he ceremoniously read to the family. After his beloved wife of 57 years passed, he moved to Miami and arrived at Hazel Cypen tower in January 2012.

Here he continued to enjoy many activities and quickly made many new friends. His kind and engaging demeanor made him a favorite among his peers and the staff. He enjoyed his water color and card making classes with Kay, his ceramics classes with BJ, playing Pokeno and black jack with Yvonne and, of course Bingo, where he was unusually lucky, it seems.

Morris was definitely competitive and liked to win. He loved Sunday music sessions with Joe and the other visiting musicians and was often seen clapping his hands and singing along with a big grin on his face. He enjoyed his dining partners, Sarah and Shirley, who always kept a watchful eye out for him and knew all his eating preferences.

He was grateful to the kind nursing staff, Nancy, Vanite, Marguerite and others, and had a profound attachment to his aides, Carmen and Cheri, who, he always said, anticipated his every need. Leslie and Louise quietly looked out for him behind the scenes. He considered himself a fortunate man.

He was a truly gentle soul who touched the lives of many people. He will be missed. Arrangements by Blasberg-Rubin-Zilbert Memorial Chapel (305) 865-2353 To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Morris, Moishe (Lefty) Schulman please visit our Sympathy Store.
