Life Story for Muriel Stemmann Muriel G. Stemmann at the ripe young age of 96, passed away on October 22, 2018, at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, NY. She was born on January 15, 1922, in Brooklyn, NY to Beulah & William Berry. Muriel has called the small island of Broad Channel her home her entire life.

Her family home was one of the first built on what is now Cross Bay Blvd. During her long life, Muriel had various jobs such as being a nurse for the U.S.O. during World War II, or working for an insurance company on John Street in Manhattan. If you don’t remember Muriel by name, you may have known her as the “Can-Can” lady, trailing at the end of Broad Channel’s annual Labor Day parade each year in her red-striped suit and “The-End” sign hanging off her back.

But Muriel will be most remembered for her spunky personality and infectious humor. To anyone who knew her, Muriel was the lady quick with a joke, whether you needed one or not. She was a woman of many words and could brighten up a whole room with laughter.

We were blessed to learn many lessons from Muriel, but the one lesson she taught everyone – “Don’t get old – it’s for the birds’ will stay with us forever. ` Left to honor Muriel, pass on her jokes, and remember her love is her daughter and son-in-law Bonnie & Jimmy Muller; grandchildren Anthony, Elizabeth, & Melissa Muller; and greatgrandchildren Alex, Isabella, Zachery, & Garrett. Muriel was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers William, Arthur, & Kenneth Berry.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at Hillebrand Funeral Home, located at 1238 Cross Bay Blvd. , Broad Channel, NY 11693, directly across the street from Muriel’s home. The family will greet friends to celebrate the life of Muriel from 2 P.M. to 5 P.M. and 7 P.M. to 9 P.M.

She will be laid to rest at The Evergreens Cemetery, 1629 Bushwick Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11207, on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 11 A.M., beginning with a prayer at the funeral home at 10 A.M.
