Myrtle Lee Adams Vickers, age 92, of Ambrose, Georgia passed away on Thursday December 6, 2018 at Vista Park. Mrs. Vickers was born on November 21, 1924 in Coffee County, Georgia the daughter of the late Thomas Leon Adams and Emma Lee McKinnon Adams. She was preceded in death by her husband, Conway Vickers and was the last survivor of two girls and three boys of the Adams Family.
She lived in Coffee County all of her life . She was an active member of the St. Illa Missionary Baptist Church, serving as a treasurer and choir director for many years. Myrtle attended elementary school in Nicholls, Georgia through the ninth grade and then transferred to the new Satilla High School and graduated in May 1942 as the Valedictorian of her graduating class.
She married Conway Vickers on August 21, 1942. Myrtle was part owner of Shady Acres Convalescent Center and served as a bookkeeper from February 1969 until being appointed as Administrator from the fall of 1969 until her retirement in 1998. Shady Acres opened as a sixty-one bed facility and grew under her leadership to one hundred and sixty-eight beds.
Myrtle was elected to the Board of the Georgia Nursing Home Association as the Proprietary At-Large Member. She was appointed to the Georgia Council on Aging by Georgia Speaker of the House, Thomas Murphy in 1991. Also in 1991 she was selected as Administrator of the Year by the American College of Nursing Homes.
Myrtle served on the Georgia Nursing Home Licensure Board for twelve years. She served as President of the Southeast Council of Georgia Nursing Homes. Myrtle was on the board of the Southeast Health Planning during its entire existence and served as its President and Secretary.
She served on the Georgia Nursing Home Advisory Board for the Department of Medical Assistance. Myrtle served two terms on the board of the Coffee County Chamber of Commerce. She always focused all of her efforts on the health, happiness and safety of the residents of Shady Acres.
The residents were always the first consideration in any decision at Shady Acres. Her mission at Shady Acres was to ensure that the residents were well cared for. Survivors include three sons, Claude Leon Vickers (Cheryl ) of Newnan, GA, Kenneth Michael Vickers (Anne) of Ambrose, GA and Conway DeMarque Vickers (Sharon) of Ambrose; six grandchildren, Candice Bryant (Kevin) of Newnan, GA, Jesse Dean (Alex) of Ambrose, GA, Chloe Vickers of Ambrose, GA, Schuyler Vickers of Ambrose, GA, Micajah Vickers (Hannah) of Ambrose, GA and Michael Vickers of Colorado; six great grandchildren, Parker Bryant, Preston Bryant, Judson Dean, Kensley Vickers, Maylie Vickers and Daniel Vickers; sister-in-law, Quinette Adams of Douglas, GA; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday December 9, 2018 at 3:00pm at St. Illa Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Donnie Kirkland and Rev. Jimmy McMillan officiating.
She will lay-in-state at the church on Sunday from 2pm to 3pm prior to the service. Interment will follow at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6pm to 9pm at Sims Funeral Home.
Congregational songs will be “Amazing Grace” and “In the Garden” with Lois Mills on the piano. Lois Mills will play prelude and postlude. Sympathy may be expressed by signing the online registry at www.
