LIFE STORY Myrtle May Samuels, 84, daughter of the late Amos Samuels and Wilhel Clayton was born on June 1, 1934, in Llandewy, St. Thomas, Jamaica. She received her formal education in Jamaica where she learned many recitations; she loved reciting them for anyone who would listen. She professed her faith in Jesus Christ as a young woman.
She lived in Kingston, Jamaica and then migrated to the United States in 1993. She lived in New York with her family before moving to Philadelphia in 2005. When she moved to Philadelphia, she became a member of Calvary Gospel Chapel.
At Calvary, she enjoyed sharing special treats such as peanut cakes and gizzadas. She nurtured many and was affectionately called Coco, which was given to her by her great-great nephew Josiah. As a young woman, she met Henry Pounall and they were blessed with their only son, Alan Pounall of Jamaica.
Myrtle was preceded in death by Henry and her granddaughter Damali Pounall. Coco had a generous spirit and pleasant personality, she was loved by many. She was the caregiver to many of her family members; she loved her family both near and far.
She also was a great cook and made sure she fed everyone that walked through her doors. She made many treats, but her dumplings were the talk of the family. Her Christian life was as beautiful as the songs that she loved to sing.
Coco always had a song in her heart and loved singing while she knitted, watched TV or talked with you. Her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. On Saturday, January 12, 2019, at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with loved ones surrounding her, she entered into glory.
Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her son Alan; daughter-in-law, Jacqueline; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Hazel Baker (Herman) of Philadelphia; and a host o family members and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Saturday, January 26, 2019, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. in Calvary Gospel Chapel, 4121 W.
