OBITUARY Nancy G Cheney August 30, 1930 – December 13, 2018 Nancy Goff Cheney (Mrs. John A.), a longtime Dallas resident, died Thursday, December 13, 2018. A funeral mass will be Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 8017 Preston Road. Monsignor Donald Zimmerman will officiate.
A Rosary will be at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at Sparkman Hillcrest, 7405 W. Northwest Hwy. Mrs. Cheney was preceded in death by her husband John A. Cheney. She is survived by two sons, John R. Cheney and wife Marilyn, Bobby Cheney and wife Gail, two daughters, Camille Cheney Fournier and husband David and Allison Cheney, seven Grandchildren, John D. Cheney and wife Aundi, Melissa Cheney Polk and husband Aaron, Lisa Cheney Moore and husband Wayne, Lindsey Cheney McClain and husband Matt, Carter Fournier and wife Hayley, Lauren Fournier Diebel and husband Spencer, Ben Fournier, 13 Great Grandchildren, John William, Jackson(deceased) and Garrett Cheney, Dylan Polk, Holden, Gwen, and Gretchen Moore, Ryder and Hudson McClain, Sophie and Madeline Fournier, Wade and Wyatt Diebel, and 2 sisters Jane McIntire Jordan and husband Darrell and Judy Goff Pittman and husband Bill and our beloved Emma Jean McMahon Born in Sulphur Springs, Texas, Mrs. Cheney came to Dallas at an early age.
She was a graduate of Southern Methodist University and was active in business, civic, social, religious, charitable and political activities both locally and nationally. She and her husband began The Southwest Sanitary Company which became one of the most successful and best known industrial chemical companies in the nation. Mrs. Cheney was a national Board of Directors member of the Alzheimer’s Association at its inception.
When President Ronald Reagan signed the first Alzheimer’s Funding Bill in the Oval Office, Mrs. Cheney was present with members of Congress. She co-founded the Rita Hayworth Gala for Alzheimer’s in Dallas in 1988, which helped fund the Alzheimer’s Research Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. In 2006, she received an award from the Alzheimer’s Association in Washington D.C. for her “Outstanding Leadership and Service and Dedication to Alzheimer’s”.
Mrs. Cheney was a founding member of the “Walk to Cure Lupus” in Dallas for the Alliance for Lupus Research in 2005. She also co-chaired the first Legacy Award dinner benefitting the Center for Brain Health in 2006. She served on the Board of Trustees of “The Sixth Floor Museum” from its inception and remained a trustee Emeritus.
A life long Catholic, Mrs. Cheney was a member of the Christ the King Catholic Church. She served as president of the Altar Society and originated “Circles of Ministry”. She served on both local Board of Directors and the International Board of Governors of Legatus, an organization of Catholic business executives.
She was on the Parish Advisory Council of Catholic Charities in Dallas and and member of the Angels of Charity. She was a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of the Jerusalem and a member of the Order Of Malta. In September 2003, she enjoyed a private audience with Pope John Paul II in his Library at the Vatican.
