Nellie Sylvia Burkum, age 93 of Soldiers Grove and formerly of Viroqua and rural Ferryville, passed away on Wednesday morning, June 27th, 2018 at the Soldiers Grove Health Services in Soldiers Grove. She was born on March 25th, 1925 in Crawford County to Iver and Marthea (Hetland) Erickson. On Februrary 26th, 1946 she married Adolph Burkum.

They farmed at Rush Creek, rural Ferryville for thirty-four years when they retired to Viroqua in 1984. She had been baptized and confirmed at the West Prairie Hauge Lutheran Church where she was a member until the church closed in 1990. Nellie was a great homemaker and baker.

She also enjoyed babysitting and playing cards. Adolph died on October 14, 2005. The past thirteen years she had been in the care center in Soldiers Grove where she received outstanding care.

Nellie is survived by nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by four sisters; Alma Green, Leona Erickson, Mildred Green and Irene Runice. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin “Stub” Erickson and Alfred “Lars” Erickson.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, June 29th, 2018 at the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua with Pastor Lori Kleppe officiating. Burial will be in the West Prairie Hauge Cemetery at rural Viroqua. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of services on Friday.
