“Junior” Nels Brunick, 89, a long-time resident of Vermillion, South Dakota passed away peacefully on Monday, June 18, 2018 at Prairie Estates Care & Rehab. Center in Elk Point after a brief illness. Jr. was born November 17, 1928 on a farm, west of Vermillion to Nels & Lucy (Shuff) Brunick.

JR took over in 1952 and worked there until 1988 when his son, David took over the Brunick Gas Station. Jr. graduated from Vermillion High School and married the love of his life, Shirley Collins on March 27, 1948. To this union, three children were born, Jo Lynn, Diana, and David.

He liked speed – He raced boats, motorcycles, but stock cars were his favorite. He raced Black & White “16” for about 20 years all around the area and did extremely well. We thought he was the best.

He had an airplane and enjoyed hunting coyotes with his father-in-law, Mike. Jr always had a boat to take his family out on weekends on the water to ski and have fun. Jr. was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and was a life-time member of Trinity.

Jr. served many years with the Fire Department, served on the city council, and a member of Eagles. He flew with the Civil Air Patrol, hunted with the Black Hills Hunt club and always had a bowling team. He was a good son, husband, and father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He loved his family and we loved him. – Thanks be to God. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Shirley of Vermillion; his children, Jo Lynn (Rodney) Johnson of Sioux City, IA, Diana (Gregg) Radigan and David (Shelley) Brunick all of Vermillion; 7 grandchidren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brother, Duane (Lorraine) Brunick of Sioux Falls; his aunt, Esther (Shuff) Sullivan of WI; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.
