Norma Jean Martin February 16, 1930 – May 11, 2019 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts Sign Guestbook| Memorial Donation Graveside services for Norma Jean Martin of Ruston will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Ruston under direction of Owens Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Ruston, LA. Norma Jean was born on February 16, 1930 in Farmerville, Louisiana to James and Lavara Garris Love. Soon after her birth the family moved to Linville, were Norma Jean grew up.

Norma Jean graduated from Linville High School in eleven years and was salutatorian of her class. Her mother wanted the children to further their education so the family moved to the Wesley Chapel Community in order to be close to Louisiana Tech. Five of the Love Family graduated from Louisiana Tech.

Norma Jean Attended Louisiana Tech from 1947-1951. She earned a BS degree with a major in Home Economics. She began teaching at Central High School and taught there five years.

She soon realized that teaching was not what she wanted to do the rest of her life, so she enrolled in LSU. She received her MS degree in Library Science in1957. Norma also attended classes at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.

In 1957, she began working at the Lincoln Parish Library when it was located on West Alabama. She worked on the bookmobile three days a week and in the library two days a week. On June 21, 1958 Norma married Gene Martin of the Wesley Chapel Community.

They continued to live in the community forty-five years and in 2003 Gene passed away. Norma Jean was an active member of the Ruston Church of Christ since her college days. She was a great supporter of the Christian Student Center, a place where college students can continue their Christian life while in school.

Family members preceded her in death are her mother and father, one sister, Floyce Torrey of Florida and four brothers, Victor, Olby Lee, Don and George. She survived by one sister, Nelwyn of Castor, and one sister-in-law, Jeannie of Ruston. Visitation will be 5:00 PM-7:00 PM, Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at Owens Memorial Chapel.
