Norma Lee (Snyder) Varner, 91, of Monterey, passed away Friday, June 1, 2018, at the home of her daughter in Weyers Cave, surrounded by her family, and was the widow of James Franklin Varner, who died October 10, 2006. Mrs. Varner was born May 28, 1927 in Staunton, the daughter of the late Samuel Cameron and Annie Laura (Karicofe) Snyder. She was also preceded in death by her brother William Cameron Snyder.
Mrs. Varner spent the early of her life at the home place at Doe Hill. She graduated from McDowell High School and Harrisonburg Business College. On June 21, 1947, she married James Franklin Varner of Mustoe.
Prior to her marriage she was employed in Staunton in secretarial and accounting positions. After moving to Monterey in 1950, she was employed in the Highland County Commissioner of the Revenue Office and retired from the Highland County Department of Social Services after 37 years of service. Mrs. Varner was always active in church and community activities.
She was a lifelong member of Doe Hill United Methodist Church and was active in the Monterey United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, was Sunday School pianist and was active in the Monterey United Methodist Women. She was very active in the Highland Chapter United Daughter of the Confederacy, where she served as secretary for many years. She was a member of the Highland Historical Society of the American Cancer Society, the Easter Seal Society, the American Saddlebred Horse Association and the American Saddlebred Museum.
She assisted her husband in his horse business and with showing horses with their daughter, Vonne, for many years. She was an avid reader and wrote poetry. She loved music, nature, animals, gardening and flowers, especially pink roses and lilies.
She was an avid collector with numerous interest. Above all she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She is survived by daughter, Vonne Kameron Siron; grandson, James Evan Siron; two granddaughters, Lauren Mercedes Siron and McKenzie Leigh Crawford Sheets; large number of cousins and many friends.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at Obaugh Funeral Home with Pastor Chip Hill officiating. Burial will follow in Monterey Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Active pallbearers will John Burke, Delbert Rexrode Jr., Perry Huffer II, Matlin Lightner, Richard Waybright, Sheldon “Sam” Waggy, Terry Harper and Dale Hammer. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Cook, Jerry Rexrode, Michael Herold, Kenny Herold, Jamie Garrison, David Armstrong and Elmer Waybright.
