FT. MYERS, FL – Normand J. Messier, 93 passed away Friday, September 28, 2018 at home in Ft. Myers, FL, from natural causes surrounded by loved ones.

Born in West Warwick, RI on July 22, 1925, he was the son of Jean-Baptiste and Melodie Cotnoir Messier. Normand served in the 38th Armored Infantry of the U.S. Army at the Normandy Invasion. Upon returning from Europe, he married Therese Fontaine in 1945 at St. Mary’s Church in Jewett City, CT.

They made their home in Griswold, CT where Normand worked at Triangle PWC. Upon his retirement in 1985 they moved to Ft. Myers.

Normand is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Therese “his angel”; four children: Normand J. Messier Jr. and wife Carolyn, John A. Messier and wife Mildred, Mark A. Messier and wife Anna-Liisa and Joyce M. Welsh and husband Edward (Jim); six grandchildren: granddaughter: Kirsten Messier; grandsons: Jeffrey Messier and wife Stacy, John Messier Jr. and wife Anya, Jason Messier, Justin Messier, Eric Messier and wife Heather, and Kevin Messier and wife Chelsea; and nine great-grandchildren: Tyler, Sean, Brienna, Caden, Lyla, Gabriel, Maja, Kaja, and Jacob. He is also survived by two brothers: Joseph Messier and wife Cecile and Andre Messier; as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his three sisters: Flore, Rita and Annette; and his brother: Agenard.

Normand’s first love was his family. He enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots and the UCONN women’s basketball games. He loved to fish and be outdoors.

He also raised champion pigeons, racing coon dogs and exotic fish. He was known for his woodworking craftsmanship and his cooking and grilling abilities. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 4th from 4:00-6:00pm at Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home in Griswold, CT.

A Celebration of Life mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Jewett City, CT on November 5th at 10:00 am, followed by interment with full military honors at Pachaug Cemetery in Griswold. For online condolences please go to www. gagnepiechowski.com.
