Born in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Glen and Irene Harrington in September 1945, Nyla lived her early life in Flandreau, South Dakota. She went on to earn a bachelor degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in elementary education, graduating in 1967.

Upon completion of her degree, Nyla moved east to New York, initially settling in Frankfurt and working in Utica as an elementary school teacher. She then moved to North Syracuse and took a position teaching first grade at Moses Dewitt Elementary school. Nyla met many life-long friends while teaching, and in the case of one, her eventual sister-in-law, Nyla met her future husband and love of her life, Martin F. Hilfinger III.

They were married on August 8, 1970. After the wedding, Nyla and Marty lived in Syracuse, purchasing their first home at 743 Allen Street. There they had their four children, with Nyla retiring from teaching public school and focusing her time on raising her family.

While in Syracuse, Nyla spent many years watching over her children and assisting at Erwin United Methodist Preschool. She also taught Sunday school for many years at Rockefeller United Methodist Church. In 1987 the family moved to Tully, where Nyla enjoyed watching and cheering for her four children as they participated in various sports.

She was an ardent sports fan and never missed a race or game, and when not cheering for her children, she enjoyed spending time with her family rooting for the Syracuse Orange in football, basketball and lacrosse. Nyla eventually took a position at Wortley’s Drugstore and then Kinney Drugs, working as a sales associate for more than 20 years. In her later years, Nyla enjoyed spending time with Marty and their family at Tully Lake or wherever they gathered.

Nyla is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Martin F. Hilfinger III; her four children: Martin (Alisa) Hilfinger, Robert (Libbi) Hilfinger, Amy (Scott) Boesel, and David (Kathryn) Hilfinger; 13 grandchildren; her brother Bernie (Cathy) Harrington and many other loving relatives. Calling hours will be scheduled in the coming weeks at Hartwell Funeral Home in Tully and burial will be in the spring at Tully Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Association of Upstate New York.
