Obituary for Omega “Meg” Smith Omega Lee Smith, known to all as Meg, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2018 at the Halifax Hospice Care Center in Ormond Beach. Meg was the sixth of eight children that Madie and John Richardson raised in the Dallas neighborhood of Oak Cliff. She became the preacher’s daughter, as Meg’s father wore many hats during the great depression, but the most prominent was an evangelist pastor in the Assembly of God.
After graduation from Adamson High School, with classmate actress Linda Darnell, Meg attended business college while modeling for Neiman Marcus. With the outbreak of the war, she was called to southern California applying her newly acquired administrative skills for the War Department processing volunteer sailors. Her most notable inductee was a charming, Henry Fonda.
Fate called her back to Texas where she met a young Naval Academy graduate. Gene Smith, just back from the Pacific theatre, was attending flight school in Dallas. After a brief but loving wartime courtship, the new bride transitioned well into Navy wife life and eventual motherhood.
Changing home venues that Navy life brings, she settled into motherhood and on a personal side, she developed an eye for art that blossomed later in her life’s journey. The mid-fifties saw Commander Gene enter the corporate world with notable duty stations in beloved Corpus Christi, Pittsburgh, and Detroit. With the sudden loss of the love of her life in the early eighties, she relocated to Ormond Beach to be near her son, Howard, and was later joined by her daughters Nelda and Licia.
The next thirty-eight years were devoted to her new life in the Trails, nurturing new friendships, transitioning her passion from oil painting to the creation and replication of fine antique dolls. Her art, as fine as it was, was only second to her masterful penmanship. Her youngest daughter, Licia , provided splendid care for her, especially during the last year and a half of her life.
Meg is pre-deceased by her parents, siblings, husband, and great grandchild, Scarlett Frisbie. She leaves behind her children, Howard (Roben) Smith of Daytona Beach, Nelda (John) Davis of Ormond Beach, and Licia Babb of Ormond Beach, and three grandchildren Kiayan Reuter (John Cargile) of Denver, Colorado, Emilee Frisbie (Kevin) of Denver, Colorado, and James Lane (Cristina) of Portland, Oregon, and five great grandchildren, Harper Frisbie, Viola Frisbie, Hollis Cargile, Callaway Jo Lane, and Kenzo James Lane. Meg will be reunited with Gene and other family members under the shadow of the Mast of the battleship Maine in Arlington National Cemetery sometime in the spring, 2019.
