Oscar James Chapman, Jr. was born July 17, 1938, in Wilmington, Delaware to Mildred Acree Chapman and Oscar James Chapman Sr He departed this life May 1, 2019, in St. Francis Hospital, surrounded by his family. Bunky, as he was affectionately called by his family, received his early education in the Baltimore School System.

Upon graduation he matriculated to Maryland State University, where he played basketball. After his schooling, he started his career with General Motors and later worked for New Castle County where he retired in 2001, after 30 years of service. In 1957, Oscar met and married Ruth Ann Green.

From this union, six children were born Deybra, Catherine, Cynthia, Oscar, William and Edith Chapman. In his retirement years, he enjoyed volunteering as an assistant coach for William Penn High School Girl’s Basketball Team. An excellent swimmer, he was dedicated to fitness, exercising multiple times a week.

Oscar was an avid sports fan. His favorite teams were the 76ers, Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco Giants. He also loved listening to Jazz and Old School music, as well as spending time with family and friends.

He was most proud of being a faithful servant of Ezion Mt. Carmel Church for 30+ years, where he served on the Usher Board, the Mattie B. Love Care Program, the Media Ministry, the Agape Program, Hour of Power (religiously), the media ministry and the United Methodist Men. Oscar was Predeceased in death by his parents, Oscar Chapman, Sr. and Mildred Boddy; stepfather, Paul C. Boddy; and a daughter, Catherine Chapman.

He leaves behind his devoted companion of 25 years, Mary Mitchell and her two daughters Karen Abdelwahab (Azmi) and Lisa Sapienza (Philip). Oscar also leaves to cherish his memory his children, Deybra Chapman, Cynthia Chapman, Oscar Chapman, William “Paul” Chapman and Edith “Edy” Chapman; a bonus daughter, Robin Baldwin; one daughter-in-law, Patricia Chapman; 14 grandchildren, Minyon (Shaun), Dyshon, Serena, Ciara (Harold), Al, Sunseria, Jade, Ernie, Oscar IV, Laqwin, Paige, OsShan, Victor, and William; 13 great-grandchildren; devoted friends; George Williams, Bernard Deedon, Will Pinkston and Neil Webster; and a host of cousins and friends.
