Obituary of Patricia Jarvis Patricia (Pat) Ann Jarvis, 74, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2019 at the Brightonian Nursing Home, where she was recovering from pneumonia. Pat was a devoted mother, an engaged community member, and a dedicated teacher, beloved by family and friends for her curiosity, creativity, and generosity. Born June 3, 1944 to Jessica and Emory Coleman, Pat grew up in Jamaica, Queens and Wantagh, New York.

After attending Sacred Heart Academy, she graduated from St. John’s University as class valedictorian. She taught high school English and Social Studies briefly after her marriage to Joseph Jarvis in 1966, but left work to raise her two children, Michael and Christina. After completing her certification in mathematics at East Stroudsburg University, Pat taught math and computers at Stroudsburg Middle School for more than twenty years.

She also earned a Master’s in Educational Technology from Lehigh University in 1992. A resident of Stroudsburg for thirty-five years, Pat served her community by volunteering for the Legal Aid Society, tutoring single mothers, sewing vestments and banners for St. Luke’s Catholic Church, and becoming an assistant Girl Scout Troop Leader. She co-founded Monroe County’s Environmental Action Group, which organized local events for the first Earth Day and started the county’s paper and glass recycling program.

Especially gifted at counted cross-stitch and knitting, Pat was also a charter member of the Pocono Mountain Embroiderers’ Guild of America. In retirement she moved to Western New York to be near her children, and she focused her baking, photography, and crafting talents on her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Joseph Jarvis of Orchard Park, NY; her children, Michael Jarvis (Anna) of Penfield, NY and Christina Jarvis (Thomas Annear) of Fredonia, NY; her siblings, Dennis Coleman (Pat) of Binghamton, NY, Donna Redisch (David) of Tampa, FL, and Thomas Coleman (Tricia) of Greenland, NH; and grandchildren, Charlotte and Katie Jarvis and Christopher and Calder Annear.

The family will hold a private celebration of her life at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to WXXI, Rochester’s PBS & NPR station. members.
