Patrick A. Morningstar, age 93, husband of Ethelyn, passed away Wednesday, May 16, 2018 in Muskegon. He was born December 26, 1924 in Muskegon to George A. Morningstar and Estella Kelly Morningstar. He married Ethelyn Plescher on December 26, 1943.
Pat worked at Norge for several years before his long-time employment at Teledyne Continental Motors. In his earlier years, he was also the projectionist at both the Shelby and Montague Theaters. He was a World War II veteran and a member of the Gordon Bates Post #30 of the American Legion.
He was a long-time member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. He helped build the church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Pat worked with his father and later with Bob Pochyla painting houses. He also drove semi’s for Fox’s and dump trucks for Beckman Brothers during slow times at Teledyne Continental. Pat was always interested in Shelby and its history.
He was truly the town historian. He started the school safety patrol program in Shelby and the posting of fireman on the street corners during Halloween. He was a volunteer fireman for the Shelby-Benona Fire Department for over fifty years.
He was also the department Secretary-Treasurer. Pat served on the Shelby Village Council many years. He drove school bus for Shelby Public Schools.
He is survived by his wife, Ethelyn; his daughters, Penny Morningstar-Butler and her husband, Robert Butler of Shelby, Michele Morningstar of Florida, Robin Morningstar of Shelby and Patricia (and her husband, Mark) Mahn of Warrenton, Virginia; grandchildren, Joseph Brigham, Jeff Brigham, Stephanie (Todd) Godfrey, Danielle Forbear, Travis (Rebecca) Forbear, Terrah (Kevin) Schmieding, Celeste (Chris) Jablonski, Molly Morningstar-Bertrand (and her husband, Matthew Bertrand), Zachary Downer, Mark Adam (Cheryl) Mahn, Dominic Mahn and Steven Mahn; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Mabel Morningstar; sister, Margaret “Mary” Morningstar; brother, George “Mike” Morningstar; infant brother, Jacob Morningstar; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation is Friday, May 18th, 5-8 pm with a Rosary service at 7:30 pm at Harris Funeral Home in Shelby.
The Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, May 19th, 11 am at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Shelby with Father Thomas Bolster as Celebrant. Interment with military honors will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Shelby. Memorials to the American Lung Association, 1475 E. 12 Mile Road, Madison Heights, MI 48071 are appreciated.
