Obituary for Paul Marcel Shaffer Paul Shaffer, aged 69, passed away on the morning of June 22nd, 2018. During his storied life, Paul pursued many passions: he was a prolific artist, an avid reader, a learned and expressive minister, and a counselor dedicated to healing victims of domestic violence. His humor and enthusiasm made him an exceptional minister to youth, as did his lifelong love of comics and illustration.

He was also a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Paul was drawn to visual art; after attending Illinois College for two years, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the Kansas City Art Institute. While earning his degree, he met Marti, his future wife of 44 years and mother of his two sons, Elon and Lucas.

Soon after his graduation from college, he was called to the Episcopal Ministry and received his Masters degree in Divinity at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois and later ordained in Shenandoah, Iowa . Throughout his career, Paul’s desire to learn and love of books never left him, and in later years he earned a Phd in Ministry from Wisdom University in Oakland, California. During his time as an Episcopal priest, Paul has ministered to congregations in Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, and Minnesota.

In addition to his time in the church, Paul continued his teaching and mentoring of children as a head counselor at summer camps in Boone, Iowa and Cass Lake Minnesota. Later in life, he worked as a counselor for victims of domestic abuse in Illinois. Paul loved sharing his spirituality and love of art with children.

In retirement, he contributed illustrations to children’s books and volunteered for the Young Rembrandts art program, teaching and mentoring developing artists in several Minneapolis schools. His knowledge, faith, creativity, and his open willingness to share these gifts will be remembered. Paul is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary, and brothers, Thomas and David.

He is survived by his wife, Marti; sons, Elon (Bethany) and Lucas (Mackenzie); grandchildren, Simon and Amelia – Elon’s son and daughter; and many other family members. A memorial service will be held at St. John In the Wilderness Episcopal Church, 2175 1st St. White Bear Lake, MN on Sunday, July 15th, at 3pm. Visit with family one hour prior to the service.
