Pia Maria Frieda Wilhelmina Machowetz Baird Nov. 11, 1935 ~ Feb. 14, 2019 Pia Maria Frieda Wilhelmina Machowetz Baird, 83, passed away after a vehicle accident early evening on Thursday, February 14th, 2019.

A long-time Ogden resident, Pia was very loved by her community of friends and dear family. Born November 11, 1935 in Vienna, Austria to Wilhelm Schonich and Frieda Maria Ottilia Machowetz, Pia was just a small child at the outbreak of World War II. What hardships she endured then proved a foundation for her accomplished life.

She had a resilient character and was a survivor. Pia married airman Donald Hyrum Baird on June 6, 1956 in Bitburg, Germany. She had four children.

Pia and Don raised 3 children in Ogden and later divorced. Pia worked for many years as a professional seamstress and retired as Manager of Alterations for Nordstrom Company at their Salt Lake City location. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Pia in later years was also a devoted parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She gave generous service throughout the community. Pia loved following current events, frequently socializing with her circle of wonderful European friends and shopping. She also looked forward to family gatherings at her home.

Her participation in Ogden’s Hof festival was always one of her yearly delights. She will be remembered over the years for her vivacious personality, red hair, and classy attire. She will be sorely missed by family and friends who looked forward to her hugs and warm greeting.

Rest in peace our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Pia is survived by her daughter, Ava Machowetz Huber, Austria; sons, Steven (Julie) Baird, Henderson, NV; Ronald (Lisa King) Baird, Nephi; and Daughter, Renée (Steve) Bankhead, Layton; 10 grandchildren, to whom she was ‘Omi’, and 10 great-grandchildren, to whom she was ‘Omama’. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, February 23 at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.

Friends may visit family on Friday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm and on Saturday from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at the Mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
