Rachel M Lowery June 24, 1930 – February 28, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Dearly beloved Rachel Mae Lowery was born on June 24, 1930 in Gaffney, Cherokee County, South Carolina. Rachel was the third of ten children born to Samuel and Odessa Smith Hamwright. Rachel was named after her paternal grandmother who was a Cherokee Indian.

She was proud of her American Indian heritage, and kept that fighting Indian spirit instilled in her from her beloved father Sam Hamwright. She was a fighter to the end. At the age of 88, she survived going on six days on hospice without taking in any fluids or nutrition with her loving daughter April at her side.

Through it all, Rachel loved the Lord and maintained her faith in God to the very end. Even at 88 years of age, Rachel was a beautiful woman who did not have a wrinkle on her face. Rachel was called home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday morning, February 28, 2019.

At an early age, Rachel and her family moved to New Jersey, and she attended schools in Glassboro and Woodbury. She worked as a nurse’s aide in Memorial Hospital in Woodbury. She was hardworking gathering crops on the farms for many years including picking blueberries in Hammonton.

Rachel married Clarence D. Lowery on July 13, 1949. Sadly, Rachel became a widow at an early age. She spent most of her life as a devoted and loving mother and as a homemaker taking care of her children.

She was always working hard and doing something for her children, and she taught her children the same work ethic. She was always there for them. She was a warrior who fought fiercely for her children, and she made many sacrifices for them.

She taught all her children about the Lord starting at an early age, and she wanted to see all her family again someday in heaven. Rachel had a wonderful personality, and she had a good sense of humor. She had such a pretty smile.

Rachel truly was such a beautiful, loving, kind and caring spirit. She liked gardening, feeding and watching the birds, especially her favorite blue jays, decorating beautifully at Christmas time, and listening to good gospel music. She enjoyed eating good food, and she was a good cook.

She often cooked and baked from scratch. Rachel gave birth to nine children: Clarence (deceased), Janette, Richard (Cenaida), Samuel (Barbara), Carrie, William, Sheila, April and April’s twin (deceased at birth) and raised one grandbaby, Cleopatra Lowery (deceased) as her own, all of whom she loved dearly. She is survived by her children, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, many relatives, including her much beloved brothers and sisters: Nellie Thacker, Willie Hamwright, David (Renee) Hamwright, Brenda Hambright, and Leroy (Nellie) Hamwright.

She is predeceased by her beloved brothers Ed Hamwright and Charles Hamwright and her beloved sister Patricia Clay. Right now Rachel is in the presence of Jesus. She can see again.

She can walk again. She can dance again. Someday we will have the opportunity to see this sweet, beautiful woman again.

Rachel will always be greatly loved and greatly missed by everyone blessed to know her.
