Ralph Gordon “Spike” Managan, age 93, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Brewster Village in the Town of Grand Chute with his family at his side. Spike was born November 30, 1924 in Appleton, the son of Mabel (Heimke) and Maurice Managan, the 6th of 10 children, at 11:45 in the evening, almost becoming a December 1st baby. Spike grew up in Appleton, and following his education at St. Mary Catholic Grade School, he worked as a chauffeur for a roofing salesman.

He served his country in the United States Army during the final days of WWII, and was honorably discharged in March of 1947. Spike spent much of his adult life providing for his family while working at Wisconsin Distributing, where for many years he delivered produce to area grocery stores and from which he retired in 1986. On November 29, 1947, he was united in marriage to Adris “Shorty” Braeger.

He enjoyed the good Lord’s great outdoors while hunting and fishing with his sons, brothers, nephews and friends. Spike also served as Governor of the Appleton Moose Lodge, and along with his wife Shorty, helped to make the Lodge a success. He is lovingly survived by his wife of 70 years, Shorty, and their two sons, Ralph (Jo) Managan Jr., Fox Crossing; Patrick Managan, Appleton; a grandson, Tobin Managan, Fox Crossing; a sister, Ethel Buss, Appleton; and a very special niece, MaryLee Schabo, Appleton; as well as many relatives and good friends.

Spike was preceded in death by, his parents and eight siblings. A memorial service will be held 12 Noon on Friday, July 13, 2018 at Valley Funeral Home officiated by a dear relative, Mark French. Spike’s family will receive relatives and friends at the funeral home on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.

Full Military Honors will follow the service. Inurnment will take place at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery of Appleton. Spike’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff at ThedaCare Regional Medical Center of Appleton, the Hospice staff and the staff at Brewster Village for their compassion and care for Spike and the family.

A memorial fund is being established.
