(Halen) Klauss, 90, of Mystic, CT died Monday, January 21, 2019 at home surrounded by her family. Born June 16th, 1928 in Littleton, NH she was the daughter of the late Leslie and Mildred (Kozar) Halen and was a resident of Mystic for 57 years. She was predeceased by her husband, John N. Klauss, Jr. in 1987, a sister, Marguerite Halen and a brother, Leslie Halen, Jr. Ramona was a Music Director and Organist for several local churches.

Her most recent positions were with St. Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church in Groton and the Chapel on the Naval Submarine Base. She retired in 2007. Active in the sub base Catholic community and a volunteer with several organizations, Ramona was a Red Cross Volunteer and a past Chairman of Volunteers for over twenty years at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Groton (now the Naval Health Clinic of NE).

She was also a longtime member of the Groton Senior Citizens “Swinging Stars” dancers, the Mystic Congregational Church hand bell choir and a member of the former Shepherd of the Sea Parish in Groton. Ramona was an excellent cook, gardener and seamstress who took great pride in her home. She was an accomplished artist and enjoyed creating unique handcrafted gifts for friends and family.

She was a woman of many talents and will be greatly missed by those who knew her. She is survived by her three children, Ann Apicelli of Mystic, John Klauss ( Milca) of New Bern, NC, and James Klauss (companion, Dineen) of Mystic; two sisters, Gertrude Sleeper(Webb) of Littleton, NH and Sheila Sawtelle (Ray), of Savoy, TX; grandchildren Nicholas Apicelli, Casper, WY, Peter Apicelli , Campton, NH, Adriane Apicelli, Dover, NH, Connor Klauss, Raleigh, NC, Julia Klauss, Boston, MA and Maricar, Angel and Vincent Aaron of New Bern, NC as well as three great-grandchildren. A service will be held Thursday, January 31st at 10:00 am at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1 in Mystic.

Following her service , she will be buried at St. Patrick Cemetery, in Mystic. Calling hours will be private for the family. Donations in Ramona’s name may be made to the Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Center, Waterford, CT or to a local chapter of the American Red Cross.
