Obituary for Randell “Randy” Moon Print Randy Moon, 50, died unexpectedly Monday in Liverpool, NY. He was born August 22, 1968 in Pittsfield, son of Roderick E. Moon Sr. and the late Linda W. Moon of Pittsfield. He is survived by his brother Christopher E. Moon and his wife Lori and their daughters Jessica, Kristen and Cassidy of Pittsfield.

He also leaves his niece Corinne and two aunts, Amy Hodgdon and her husband Jim Schlatter of Philadelphia, PA and Ann Cassavant of Pittsfield as well as a cousin, Eric Cassavant and his wife Charlene and their son Aaron of Pittsfield. In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by his brother Roderick E. Moon Jr; his maternal grandparents, Frederick and Vera Hodgdon, longtime residents of Pittsfield, who retired to Yarmouth Port, MA and paternal grandparents, Richard and Doris Moon of Pittsfield. He was born and raised in Pittsfield and after graduating from Taconic High School, he attended Berkshire Community College and then Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute graduating with a Mechanical Engineering degree in 1997.

Randy traveled the country for over 20 years as a Mechanical Engineer. He worked on projects involving the Bradley Fighting vehicle, command and control vehicle, surveillance vehicles, a next generation ground combat vehicle, prototype surgical instruments, locking mechanisms, a robotic arm center of gravity alteration project, municipal rail car and revolving radar equipment. For certain projects he had received security clearances from NASA and the Dept of Defense.

He was able to gain tremendous knowledge and experience from companies including Starbase Technologies, Polaroid, General Dynamics Land Systems, General Dynamics Information Technology, BAE Systems, Raytheon, Howmedica Osteonics Corp (a Stryker company) and Lockheed Martin. His jobs allowed him to experience and explore various parts of the country living in CA, TX, MI, PA, NY, and VA. He received several company awards and letters of recognition for outstanding support and technical competence.

In mid-2017 he was hired at Lockheed Martin in Syracuse as a Senior Principal Engineer where he was employed until the time of his death. Randy will be most remembered for his concern for others. At all his jobs, he focused on the team and mentoring those in need.

He was well versed in his trade software (Pro Engineer, CREO), was a tremendous problem solver and was often pulled from a specific project to help solve a problem on another project. He dreamed of one day starting his own company to fill a niche of taking on the more complicated engineering projects – he loved a challenge. He was a very giving person and enjoyed the Christmas season and celebrating others’ birthdays.

His greatest joy was making others happy. His family often received small gifts that represented the region of the country that he experienced through his job travels. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services for Randell “Randy” Hodgdon Moon, will be private.
