Carlson, a great living American age 98, was promoted to heaven May 21, 2019 at Little Sisters of the Poor from an infection that finally felled this gentle giant. Ray was preceded in death by his wife Patricia ne Reidy and daughter Karyn Sandstrom, and brother, Vernon and is survived by his son, Mike, and granddaughters Anna Sandstrom and Wendy (Steve) Tremblay; great-grandsons Oliver and Bennett as well as his sister in-laws, Helen O’Brien and Mary Cullen McKeown and many nieces and nephews. Ray is an army veteran of WW2, where he was a distinguished crew chief and flight tester in the 319th Depot Repair Squadron.

Ray repaired bombers and flight tested them before they were put back in service through North Africa, Italy and Europe. Ray returned from the war and worked for and retired from Northwest Orient Airlines where he was the head engine mechanic and solver of all difficult problems. Ray was a lifelong east-sider and member of St. Pascal’s parish.

In retirement Ray was busy every day and volunteered at the Northwest Orient Museum, The Swedish Institute, The MN History Center and St Pascals. Ray spent the final years of his life in the loving care of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Mother called Ray her “ray of sunshine” because of his aura of love and enthusiasm for life as well as his genuine regard for all the people he ever met.

Services will be Wednesday 10:30 AM at Little Sisters of the Poor 330 Exchange Street S., St. Paul, MN 55102, visitation one hour prior. Interment at Union Cemetery 2505 E. Minnehaha Ave, Maplewood, MN 55119. In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to Little Sisters of the Poor.
