Rev. John Paul Debicki, son of Roman and Jadwiga, was born on June 2, 1938 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia where his father was the Polish Ambassador. He grew up in South Africa, Cuba and Washington, D.C. where he graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School.

He studied at Harvard University and graduated from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. in 1959. After studying in Rome for several years, he was ordained a priest of the Roman Catholic Prelature Opus Dei on March 19, 1964.

He exercised his priestly ministry in Montreal, Boston, Pittsburgh, and Chicago where he was assistant pastor of St. Mary of the Angels Church for many years. He moved to Washington in 2002 and served as assistant chaplain of The Heights School. He was beloved as a confessor, preacher, and spiritual director.

He enjoyed classical music, poetry and literature and was admired for his translation skills and extraordinary memory. He is predeceased by his brother Andrew and survived by his sister-in-law, Mary-Elizabeth Debicki. His wake will be held on Monday, Feb.

4, at Tenley Study Center, 4300 Garrison St. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20016 from 7:30 pm. There will also be an hour of visitation at 9:00 am at Church of the Little Flower, 5607 Massachusetts Avenue, Bethesda, MD 20816 followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00.
