Richard Calvert Haines was born in Salina, KS, 1st born of identical twin boys to Brook Leroy Haines and Rowena Lucille Morley Haines in 1936. On Monday, March 18, 2019 Rich passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at St. Ann’s Hospital at the age of 82. Rich was a loving husband to Verna (for over 55 years), caring father to Betsy (Greg) and Christopher (Kristen), grandad to 6 (Amanda, Stephen, Ashley, Benjamin, Alyssa, and Lauren).
You could always find Rich in a crowded room by his distinguished laugh and big smile. You had to have a bear hug if meeting him at church or even being a guest in his home. Rich found time to help people at church and with the Boy Scouts as a leader for many years.
Rich graduated with his bachelor’s degree from University of Kansas and enjoyed watching the Jayhawks basketball team. He later went to Columbia University for his master’s degree in New York. That is also where he met his wonderful wife, Verna, a nurse, in 1962.
He was a CPA for his career, and he continued to help with budgets and accounting at church offices even after 65. Rich and his wife loved to travel, whether to visit his twin brother Ray (passed 2018) and wife June in Oklahoma or to civil war areas like Gettysburg. He also went to Israel with Verna to visit the holy lands which meant a lot to them both.
He even took a cruise to Alaska once since he really enjoyed nature. He was passionate about Boy Scouts and earned Eagle rank as a young man and later earned the Counsel Silver Beaver Award. He spent many weekends camping with his son, Chris, while growing up and traveled to Virginia for National Jamboree and Philmont camp in New Mexico among many adventures.
Rich contributed much time and spirit to his church. Many years at Broad Street Disciples of Christ where he was an Elder, Treasurer, and sang in the choir. He developed many lifelong friends there and always made an impact to help others.
His celebration of life service will be held at Karl Road Christian Church, 5400 Karl Rd Columbus, Oh 43229 on Saturday, March 23, 2019 with calling hours starting at 9:30 until the time of service at 10:30 with a reception to follow. He will be laid to rest at Forest lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you give a donation in his honor to Karl Road Christian Church 5400 Karl Rd.
