Richard D. Barnard, Sr. age 80 of Conneaut, died Monday evening May 6, 2019 at the David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland. Rich was born on May 5, 1939 in Conneaut, Ohio the son of David and Mildred (Lilly) Barnard. Rich attended Rowe High School and later entered the United States Army until he was honorably discharged in 1965.

While in Germany he met his wife Helga Siegl and they married February 9, 1962. They returned to Conneaut and began raising their family. Rich was the owner/operator of Rich Barnard’s Amoco Gas Station from 1977 to 1997.

He later moved to the east side of town and was the owner/operator of Rich’s Amoco from 1997 to 2004. He also was known for Rich’s Towing services for many years until he was unable to work. Rich was a member of the Lake Erie Boat Club and the Conneaut Cruisers.

He was a Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed fishing, automobiles, drag racing, cub cadet tractors and fixing things. He especially loved spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and could be seen most days with his buddies drinking coffee and having breakfast. Rich was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles Barnard and his sister Faye Marie Barnard Apple.

Rich is survived by his wife Helga Siegl Barnard of 57 years, three sons, Ron (Jackie) Barnard of Conneaut, Rich (Mary) Barnard of Conneaut, Dennis Barnard of Conneaut, a daughter Melissa (Shaun) Benoit of Ft. Lewis, WA, daughter-in-law Hattie Grubke Barnard, brother David Barnard of Conneaut, a sister Rosemary (Wells) Ross of Conneaut, 5 grandchildren Tiffany, Caitlin, Rachel, Emily, Mason and 5 great-grandchildren Austin, Blake, Tyler, Colton and Caidence. At Rich’s request there will be no public calling hours.

Funeral Service will take place at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Greenlawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum, Route 20, N. Kingsville where the American Legion Cowle Post 151 Honor Squad will conduct military honors prior to burial. Memorial contributions can be made to the Ashtabula County Animal Protective League. Envelopes will be available at the Raisian Family Funeral Home, 581 Harbor Street where arrangements have been entrusted.
