Smithfield – Richard M. Grubb, 93, of Greenville and formerly of Cumberland passed away peacefully Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Brookdale Smithfield in Smithfield. He was the beloved husband of Miriam A. (Jeffries) Grubb. Born in Akron, OH, a son of the late Paul E. and Mary (Pontius) Grubb, he had lived in Cumberland for most of his life before moving to Greenville 5 years ago.
Richard was a Senior Corporate Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing for Augat, Inc., Attleboro, MA before retiring in 1988. He was honored to receive the 1987 Man of the Year Award by the Electronic Connector Study Group for his contribution in the development and worldwide marketing of several key electronic components. He was a founding member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, Cumberland, where he served on many committees including the Building Committee.
Music and art were always a big part of his life, including piano and organ. He shared these talents with Calvin Presbyterian, as well as painting of the outdoor Christmas scene, which is still displayed annually. After his retirement, he enjoyed charcoal portraits for family and friends.
In the early 1970’s, Richard played an integral part in bringing Rhode Island Young Life to the State. Richard served on the Providence Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Advisory Council. A World War II Army veteran, he served in the 7th Army and 100th Infantry Division landing in Marseille and trekked north through France with a 30 caliber machine gun.
He was wounded in action when a landmine detonated in front of him and lived the rest of his life with its shrapnel in his chest. Besides his wife, he is survived by his loving children, Barbara J. Fay (Timothy) of Barrington, Karen Guerin (Edward) of Lincoln, Richard M. Grubb, Jr. (Marilyn) of North Smithfield and David J. Grubb (Caroline) of Bedford, NY; his brother, Ralph Grubb of Yorktown Heights, NY; his ten beloved grandchildren; his ten beloved great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Paul E. Grubb, Jr. His funeral service will be held Thursday, December 6 at 10:30 A.M. in Calvin Presbyterian Church, 126 Angell Road, Cumberland.
Military honors will follow the service. His burial will be private. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln Wednesday 4-7 P.M.
