Obituary for Richard “Rich” Schreibvogel Print Richard “Rich” Schreibvogel, 88, died Thursday, February 14, 2019 at his home in Garden City. He was born November 25, 1930 at home northwest of Holcomb. Richard was the 11th of 12 children born to the union of Antone & Margaret (Urban) Schreibvogel.

In 1951, he was inducted into the United States Army at Ft. Bliss, Texas. He became part of the 71st Engineers during the Korean War and was sent to Camp Cindi, Japan.

In 1954, he married Betty Ray in Garden City. Early in their marriage, they moved to Dayton, Ohio where he was an engineer on the BNO Railway. Two years later they returned to Holcomb to farm and raise their family.

Richard retired from farming in 1984. He then went to work for the City of Garden City for ten years, and then began driving the bus for the Senior Center. Richard truly loved that job, and anyone who ever rode with him, loved him too!

Survivors include his wife Betty Schreibvogel of the home; four children Rebecca (Larry) Jones of Holcomb, Ks, Rick (Bonnie) Schreibvogel of Pierre, SD, Steve (Carolyn) Schreibvogel of Leander, Tx, & Christine (Lanny) Diel of Ottowa, Ks; a brother Francis Schreibvogel of Ardmore, Ok; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 1 great great-grandchild. Richard is preceded in death by his parents; 6 brothers; 4 sisters; and 1 granddaughter. A Vigil Service and Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 18, 2019 also at St. Dominic Catholic Church with Rev. Warren Stecklein as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City with military graveside rites conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard and the American Legion District #8 Honor Guards.

Friends may call from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and from Noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to St. Dominic Catholic Church or the St. Catherine Hospice both in care of the funeral Home.
